Interview with Photographer Jamie Edwards
I have really enjoyed the photography of Jamie Edwards on Instagram. So, I contacted Jamie about his photography and fishing. Here is what he had to say...
GFN: What got you started doing photography and video work in the fishing industry?
I have been playing around with photography and video for over 20 years but only seriously for 5. I got into fishing side 3 years ago when a local bass tournament series I fish was in need of better photos of their events so I started bringing my gear.
GFN: What clients do you currently work with?
I work with the Tri-bay bass association (@tbba_fishing on Instagram) I've been working with anglers to try and help them promote their sponsors and grow their brand to help get more sponsors. I also provide photos and video to RahFish who have a great following on all social media platforms. Next year I will be looking to do more in the fishing side, I just haven't had the time to put into it yet.
GFN: One of my favorite photos is the one above from last year of a guy fishing a piece of open water on a concrete wall with ice in the background on the water. Just a fantastic photo. What has been some of your favorite moments/shots that you have had in the last couple of years?
I like photos like the one you mentioned they need no explanation and tell a story, the other type I like are the ones that happen so fast most people miss them. (GFN: See the great action shot on the right.)
GFN: What areas are you still trying to improve in your photography art?
The only specific thing I am trying to improve is my marketing and networking side of things.
GFN: There is another series of photos, where you have pro anglers holding out the product clearly in focus with the angler a bit out of focus in the background. These are really cool. Without giving away any secrets, what are the keys to getting good product shots?
Lighting is the most important part of photography, expensive gear helps make it easier but you need to understand photography, like how aperture affects depth of field so you can set up shots like those.
GFN: When not photographing, where are your favorite places to fish?
My favourite spots are the ones I need an extra heavy flipping stick and are so thick most anglers are afraid to go near them. There are a few bays off of Lake Erie I like or pretty much any lake/river in the Kissimmee area of Florida nothing really special flipping and pitching just really gets me excited
GFN: If someone is looking for a photographer, what type of clients do you take on and how how do they get a hold of you?
I shoot everything from corporate headshots to kids soccer games. I do shoot weddings and family portraits but events like iCast are my favourite things to do because they are so fast paced and I can shoot edit and get media to people almost instantly which makes everyone happy. Right now Instagram is how most people contact me.
