Interview with C&C Bait Company

posted on September 9, 2016
c c custom baits Interview with C&C Bait Company

I love custom bait makers and recently discovered C&C Custom Baits. Wayne Cerinetti took some time to answer our questions about this New York company and their products.

GFN: How long have you been making custom baits and what got you started?

About 30 years. When I was about 10 years old my grandfather got me hooked up with a man named Art Marioni who was making hair jigs for a then small local sporting goods store named Dick's Sporting Goods. I learned to pour heads, dye bucktails, and tie hair jigs. My passion for fishing pushed me to making all sorts of my own tackle from plugs to spinnerbaits, and my favorites the jig.

GFN: Your featured product are your Sniper Jigs. What makes a Sniper Jig stand out from the competition?

The Sniper Jig stands out because of it's custom head design that falls straight into holes in grass, can be used as a swim jig as well as a conventional jig and the stand up head design that provides solid hook sets with the highest quality hooks on the market.

GFN: How do you decide the color of jigs you are going to make and offer?

All of our colors are based off of on the water time and research. If it doesn't work for us it doesn't make it to the catalog.

GFN: Out of all of your colors, the Smallmouth Slammer really caught my attention. Is that a bubblegum pink? And in what conditions do you see this color really work well?

It is a Bubble Gum with pink. It is two different skirt materials which give it unique action that seems to drive Smallmouth crazy. It does work well on Largemouth also. I have caught fish in everything from gin clear water to stained waters on this jig. It is one of our stand out performers.

GFN: You also make custom hair jigs. Can you describe which fishing conditions you are throwing a hair jig as your choice of jig style?

Our hair jigs are used primarily for ledge style fishing. Using a snap and fall retrieve on open water drop offs is where they really shine. We also supply some salt water guys with these jigs and they have caught everything from Bluefish to Tuna on them.

GFN: You have Pro Staff. What are you looking for when you bring on a Pro Staffer?

What we are looking for is professionalism on and off the water to help promote our products. Also when applying a professional looking resume is a plus.

GFN: What is your most proud moment as a custom bait maker, a moment when you said to yourself "this is why I do this"?

When we get feedback from our customers and Pro Staff with fish that they are proud of and high finishes in tournament situations using our products is a real good feeling.

GFN: When you are not making your custom baits, where are your favorite places to fish?

Probably the St. Lawrence River. It is such a diverse fishery. You can go from fishing Smallmouth and Walleye on the shoals to hitting the backwaters and bays for Largemouth. That coupled with the beauty of the 1000 islands region it is really to me second to none.
