Maryland's Chesapeake Assassin
The moment I check out Capt. Sean Gon'Ketchum aka Chesapeake Assassin I knew I wanted to do an interview. This guy looks like he has so much fun fishing and also catches a ton of Maryland bass. Thanks Sean for sharing about your fishing and love of the Chesapeake Bay.
GFN: Based on following you on Instagram and YouTube, you have a fun time fishing. Why do you love fishing so much?
I grew up in South Baltimore City in Maryland and there's a lot of things you can do...good and bad. I chose fishing as a way to temporarily escape the struggles of city life. Water is everywhere and its always been my favorite escape from reality.
GFN: You fish for a ton of different species. What is your favorite freshwater fish species to catch and why?
Favorite fresh fish - Smallmouth bass
Favorite brackish fish - Largemouth bass
Favorite salt fish - Striped bass
Why? No live bait needed. I live to trick fish.
GFN: The Chesapeake Bay is a favorite location of yours. What are the things that make fishing the Chesapeake one of your top choices?
The upper Chesapeake Bay is my favorite place to fish because of the diversity of fish and the multitude of options. There's not too many places that I know of that you can catch the bass hat trick, Largemouth, Smallmouth, and Striped bass, all in the same location throwing the same bait. Its just a special place.
GFN: What is your favorite method for catching striped bass on the Chesapeake?
Topwater is by far my favorite technique for Stripers followed by jigging. Blowups are the best.
GFN: What are your other favorite places to fish?
Anywhere there is water is where I'm happy. I just like to roam, explore, and fish. You never know what you will catch in new spots.
GFN: You appear to fish out of a nice aluminum Tracker boat. What do you like about your Tracker?
I have a bass tracker pro-170 and I like this boat because it allows me to float in 3 inches in backwater or big wake in the big water. It is ready for whatever I need. I like aluminum boats because I fish a lot of rivers with rocks. Fiberglass just isn't enough protection.
GFN: You are nearing 2500 Instagram posts. What got you started with Instagram?
I got started on insta when my buddy showed me a 10lb bass that was caught in California. I wanted to showcase what I was catching. So I started taking pictures and posting. 3 years later in at 2500 posts. Time flies when your having fun.
GFN: A lot of us newer Instagram users are mighty jealous of your 25,000 followers. What advice do you have to other fishing Instagrammer's in developing their amount of followers?
Insta advice- keep at it. Don't worry about what others are doing. Make your own path. Be yourself. People like realness and originality. So find what your good at and get after it. 25k doesn't happen overnight.
GFN: Thanks again Sean. You can follow Sean on Instagram and YouTube.
